API Recommended Practice 754 provides solid guidance on the leading and lagging indicators of process safety and monitoring. The ability to understand and take action on these leading indicators can reduce the risk of major incidents and safety events that represent lagging indicators. 

 

When organizations truly understand the risk of their operations and take proactive action, the risk of an incident is decreased. Measuring leading indicators of major hazard risk is a focus of API RP 754. 

 

It is possible to reduce costs and increase profitability by going beyond the recommended practice and diving deeper into understanding key leading indicators before issues get to the safety shutdown system.
